World Bank Lecture

The idea of introducing a Jamaican Diaspora Bond is by no means new. The topic has been presented on several occasions. As far back as the 2008 during Jamaican Diaspora Convention, the members of the diaspora have been lobbying for the issuance of the diaspora bond. In January 2012, at the Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board Meeting, the topic was again brought to the table.

More recently, the World Bank, in collaboration with the Mona School of Business and the Jamaica Diaspora Institute hosted the World Bank Public Lecture entitled: Diaspora Bonds: Partnering with the Diaspora for investment and economic growth. The guest presenter for the evening was Dr. Dilip Ratha, Lead Economist and Manager of the Migration and Remittances Team in the Development Prospects Group at the World Bank.

He has written several articles, edited, authored and co-authored several books that relate to maximizing remittances and diaspora wealth. These include: Workers’ Remittances: An Important and Stable Source of External Development Finance;  Global Economic Prospects 2006: Economic Implications of Remittances and Migration;  Innovative Financing for Development;  Diaspora bonds: tapping the Diaspora during difficult times;  and most recently, his paper titled: Diaspora bonds for funding education.  Read More>>

  Reconnecting with our Homeland

Grand Jamaica Homecoming is about reconnecting with Jamaica. How are you reconnecting this year?

This year I'll reconnect to Jamaica in many ways. My love of country has manifested itself in the form of ongoing curiosity - wanting to learn more about our history and culture; wanting to know how I and my family can help to make a difference in the land we love and left over 45 years ago.

I admit it's partly nostalgia but more importantly at my age, it's about leaving my own family legacy. Recently my mother and I decided to sponsor a Basic School in the parish my mother grew up - St. Thomas. I'll also be visiting Jamaica a few times this year - especially looking forward to my stay at Strawberry Hill - 3,100 feet above sea level in the Blue Mountains.

As a descendant of Maroons, how better to pay tribute to my heritage than giving myself the gift of a personal journey home. - T. S. (Toronto). Read More>>
